Hair: Uncut
Stories from Hollywood Stars
| Directed by: Jordan Pitt & Fola Evans-Akingbola | Origin: UKHair: Uncut (airing on Sky Documentaries in the UK as Untold Stories: Hair on Set) is an intimate and emotive exploration of experiences with Afro hair on set, with a cast of Hollywood stars speaking for the first time on camera about their hidden struggles.
Synopsis
It’s 2024. Black people shouldn’t still feel pressure to change their hair.
Behind the scenes, away from the glitz and glamour, film and television’s brightest stars are suffering in silence because of their Afro hair. From Black British actress Fola Evans-Akingbola (Netflix’s The Night Agent & Black Mirror; Amazon Prime’s Ten Percent) comes Hair: Uncut, an intimate and emotive exploration of today’s stars’ experiences with Afro hair on set.
Speaking for the first time on camera about their hidden struggles, a cast of Hollywood stars reveal their hair stories to Fola. The inexperience and lack of knowledge on set about how to style Afro hair has infuriating and traumatic consequences. Actors describe the emotional journey of feeling that because their needs cannot be properly cared for, they don’t matter. The message they receive, just like so many other black and brown people, is that they are the wrong kind of people who come from somewhere else.
Featuring exclusive interviews from stars including Naomie Harris (Moonlight, Skyfall), Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones), David Ajala (Star Trek: Discovery), and Verona Rose (Top Boy), today’s top entertainers share for the first time their stories of hidden struggles of hair on film and TV sets. In this powerful documentary, Fola Evans-Akingbola paints an intimate picture of how something as seemingly superficial as hair quickly uncovers a whole story about what it means to be different in a place you call home.
