Synopsis
Historical fact and historical fantasy collide in Meet the Buchanans, which observes the inauguration of the newly confirmed Buchanan Clan Chief, his wife and teenage family. A hidden world of British wealth and privilege unfolds as the family uncover and invent fresh entitlements the new role brings. Join the film in real life Outlander-style as the Buchanans attract tartan enthusiasts from around the world to Scotland. Meet the Buchanans reveals not only whether they can pull off this massive event, but also how History is made, and who makes it.
After 20 years of searching, millionaire landowner Mike Buchanan is confirmed as the rightful Highland Chief. He is the husband of Paula (Lady Buchanan); father of Angus (now the ‘Heir’), Bruce (now the ‘Spare’), and Lucy, the new ‘Maid of Buchanan;’ and seventeen year-old Rory 17, fresh from the exclusive Le Rosey private school in Switzerland. They live in a magnificent house and estate on the edge of the Trossachs.
His ambitious wife Paula is planning the inaugural three-day bonanza of tartan, and ceremonial regalia on the estate. She was the driving force behind Mike’s claim to the title and is now the chief architect of his ‘coronation’ (well, much of it, when an ancient source can’t be found). Ceremony and ritual are unashamedly being invented. This is the story of how history is made… or in this case, how history is made up.
As the family seeks out and adopts increasingly bizarre and ancient entitlements, the inner workings of the British elite is revealed; raising important questions around class, national identity, history values and traditions, and the place of ‘Clans’ in the modern world.
